Cable trays are used to route different types of cables:

• Electrical cables: for power supplies and backup power;
• Hertzian reception cables: TV or satellite;
• Multimedia cables: sound systems, videoconferencing, etc.;
• Computer cables (copper, coaxial, fiber optic), intranet, and internet.

They can also serve as supports for fluids (gas, compressed air, water, etc.).

Due to the use of cable trays for various purposes and to prevent any interference, it is advisable to physically separate different types of cables (power, computer, audio/video, etc.) within the cable trays and ensure the equipotentiality of all metallic cable trays.

Common cable trays can be made of galvanized steel, electroplated, zinc-aluminum alloys, stainless steel (pickled-passivated or not), aluminum, fiberglass, or composites (fiber-reinforced plastics). The selected material depends on the characteristics (and defects) inherent to each.

When a galvanized steel cable tray is cut, the two surfaces created by the cut must be painted with a zinc-rich compound to protect the metal from corrosion.
