Among the structural differences of Ethernet cables, there is first a distinction between single-core and multi-core cables. The single-core cable is designed for Ethernet patch panels and RJ45 wall sockets. It has rigid wires to be crimped. The multi-core cable is used for making Ethernet cords. Its maximum length is theoretically 80m.

The straight Ethernet cable will be used to connect two different types of hosts, such as an Ethernet switch and a computer, or a wall socket to a network switch. The crossover cable allows you to connect two identical hosts.

Ethernet cables also come in various categories. In fact, the most commonly discussed Ethernet cable categories are Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, as well as Cat 7 or Cat 8. The main difference is the transmission speed, which ranges from 100MHz to 10Gbps. For example, a Cat 5e cable has a bandwidth of 100MHz, while a Cat 6 offers 250MHz.

The two main Ethernet cable standards are RJ11 and RJ45. The former is often used to connect devices such as landline telephones. It is the cable that links your phone socket to your internet box. The latter is used for connecting computing equipment or networks you want to link to the internet connection.
