When you look at high-voltage overhead power lines, you may notice strange-looking discs made of glass or polymer.
These are electrical insulators that prevent current from flowing into the pylons and serve as attachment points between the cables and the steel structures.
Although insulators account for only a small percentage of the overall cost of an overhead line, they are a critical component.
Their main role is to connect live conductors to metallic supports while ensuring electrical insulation between these two essential parts of the overhead line.
Suspension strings (distinguished by their vertical position) are the standard solution for suspension towers. This type of insulation is the most commonly used.
Description
Suspension insulator strings include all the necessary accessories to connect the conductor to the insulator string and to secure the string to the cross-arm or the supporting structure selected for the deployment of the medium-voltage (MV) overhead line.
The insulator consists of a galvanized cast iron cap, a toughened glass dielectric element, a galvanized steel rod assembled with cement, and a stainless steel pin.
Suitable for Aluminium, Almelec, Aluminium-Steel, and Almelec-Steel conductors. Body and cap are made of aluminum alloy.
